Construction set to begin for Australia’s largest contemporary art gallery


Construction of Australia’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design is one step closer with Lendlease being appointed the head contractor.

The Fox: NGV Contemporary, planned to span 30,000 square metres in the Melbourne’s Southbank is part of the Melbourne Arts Precinct transformation.

It is designed by architect Angelo Candalepas and his firm Candalepas and Associates, and will be a display space for art and design, including exhibition galleries, hospitality and event spaces and an expansive rooftop terrace.

Lendlease has delivered some of Victoria’s most iconic, large-scale sport and cultural precincts and projects including Ian Potter Southbank Centre, Melbourne Theatre Company and Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall and Melbourne Park.

“We share a long-standing partnership with Development Victoria and are ready to deliver The Fox: NGV Contemporary – the centrepiece of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct transformation,” said Bill Alexandrakis, Executive General Manager, Victoria, Construction, Lendlease.

“Our experienced and collaborative team will work alongside the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation, Creative Victoria, Development Victoria, and the exceptional design team led by Angelo Candalepas to create a celebrated, city-shaping cultural landmark that will create a new global destination for the arts.”

Construction is expected to commence in March 2025.
