Ever wanted to explore the Vancouver Art Gallery after dark? Now’s your chance.
The gallery’s beloved Art Party returns on November 2 for an evening of art, music, and fashion. Known for being a must-attend event for artists, art enthusiasts, and the culturally curious, Art Party has gained a reputation for the way it transforms the gallery into something more like a house party and offers the opportunity to experience the exhibits after hours.
At the heart of this year’s Art Party is the West Coast premiere of Firelei Báez’s eponymous exhibition, which opens here following its run at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The show highlights the artist’s focus on the historical and cultural narratives of the Atlantic Basin, the lasting impacts of colonialism, and the African diaspora in the Caribbean.
The night also marks the final chance to see Black and White and Everything In Between: A Monochrome Journey: an exhibition focused on the artistic possibilities of a single colour through various mediums, including scent and sound. Drawn primarily from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection, this exhibition explores the evolution of monochromatic art, from its early modernist roots to its contemporary forms.
In addition to the exhibitions, the event will feature a rooftop Diwali celebration, dance performances by Ouro Collective, a set by local DJ Niña Mendoza, and art-making activities led by 5X Fest and artist Sahil Mroke. There will be a bar serving drinks, and attendees are encouraged to wear colourful or monochrome attire.
