Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery announces Artist of the Month

The Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery has announced that Daniel Garringer of Kearney will be Artist of the Month for June 2024. His work will be on display at the museum, 218 E. Eighth St. in Cozad, with many available for purchase.

Garringer’s work will be on display at the museum and available for viewing until June 30.

Garringer has a connection to an earthy rural lifestyle that has been a consistent influence on his artistic style. His paintings and drawings often depict themes that are based on his strong belief in absolutes and shared common experiences. His work has been awarded recognition in numerous shows across the state as well as Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin.

Born 1962 in Nebraska City, he has been a lifelong resident of Nebraska. During High School at Kearney, his art teacher, Jack Shofstall, introduced him to the works of Andrew Wyeth, which set in motion a lifetime admiration of the emotional visual impact created by time-weathered ordinary subject matters. The exposure to these works still influences his style to date.

In 1980, he began pursuing a degree in art education at Kearney State College. While at KSC he worked under the supervision of exceptional professors like Jon Dinsmore, Elmer Holzricher, Jack Karraker, Keith Lowry, Larry Peterson and Ray Schultz. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree in art education, Garringer immediately started teaching art in public schools, and in 2003 he earned a master’s degree in art education. In 2011 he stepped into the director position of Kearney’s signature art event, Art in the Park.

In 2019, after 30 years of teaching art in the public school systems, Garringer retired from teaching to devote more time to creating art. In 2023 he also stepped away from the position of director of Art in the Park. Garringer currently works out of his home studio and gallery, Seven Hills Studio, which is located just northwest of Kearney.

The Artist of the Month program, now in its 21st year, was established to encourage understanding and appreciation of the arts in central Nebraska and to promote the legacy of Robert Henri, one of America’s greatest art instructors. He taught hundreds of students over his long career including Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Minerva Teichert, Marjorie Ryerson and Elizabeth Grandin. Artists can apply to the museum for consideration for entry into the program by going to its web page and printing off the application and submitting it. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 program.

The museum and art gallery are located at 218 E. Eighth St. in Cozad and is open from May 1 to Nov. 1 on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A new art gallery is being constructed on Ninth Street and is scheduled to open in the late fall.
