Charity art gallery returns with more than 100 community artworks

A unique charity gallery is returning to York Racecourse – featuring artwork created for the community by the community.

Over 100 artworks will greet racegoers as the SmART Gallery returns for the fifth year running. All of the art is created by the community in Southbank, from residents of all ages and abilities, including some professional artists.

The SmART Gallery will return to York Racecourse on Sunday 1 September 2024.

They will be displayed and available to purchase at the entrance to the racecourse.

The gallery is organised by the Southbank-based SmART Team (Small Artistic Revolution Together). The aim is to bring the community together and create art for everyone to enjoy, whilst raising money for charity.

Proceeds from the event will go to the two nominated charities for this year: the Crisis at Christmas Appeal and Home Leone. The Crisis at Christmas Appeal offers warmth, accommodation, food, companionship and vital services to people facing homelessness at one of the toughest times of the year.

Organiser Jo Dalgleish and her family have been fundraising for Home Leone for many years. The charity provides support building new low-cost homes with sanitation and waste systems, training and education to communities in Sierra Leone.

The gallery will be open from 1pm to 4pm. There will also be a selection of art and craft stalls to browse through.
